Scraps

Scraps was a project I worked on at Full Sail University that utilized Unreal Engine 3. Our team was tasked with creating a complete level that utilized assets from a very specific asset pack that was provided to us. The level that I worked on starts around 4:50 in the video below. It was the bottom level of the parking garage that the player is in. Difficulty wise this was the hardest level of the game as it was the only level in which the player could die.

I always try to inject a bit of humor into the games that I'm working on if I can. In this instance we had this port-o-potty asset that I put into my level initially without really giving it much thought. Then after I played through it a few times I thought it would be funny to add this little bit of text in. I felt that it added a bit more to the area other than just being a dead end for the player.

The turrets were an interesting addition to the game as they went through a few changes during production. At first I just wanted to have them be something the player needed to avoid however this proved to be far too difficult even with only one turret in the level. The next thing I tried was to make it so that the player could disable them by running up to them and pressing 'E' however I received feedback that said that that was also not very fun or intuitive. In the end I set it so that the player only has to run up to it to disable it.

The books and the corpses were our storytelling device throughout the game and in this instance I wanted to convey to the player that they were near a trap even if they ignored the audio log that played when you interacted with the book. It also doubled as a way to hint to the player that there was a secret that they could find if they could get through the trap.
